Lighting Academy / Level 3

Drivers, DALI, sensors and control scenarios.

Understand the control architecture before specifying a DALI variant or a connected system.

Objectives

By the end of this lesson.

  • Locate the driver and control within the luminaire architecture.
  • Define DALI, sensor or scene requirements without assuming compatibility.

The driver is part of the system

A luminaire's behaviour also depends on its power supply: dimming, current, protection, control compatibility and thermal conditions. A single family may offer several variants.

DALI and DALI-2

DALI structures communication between lighting equipment. Before specification, verify each component's role, actual compatibility and the expected level of functionality.

Detection and daylight

Presence, absence, schedules and daylight contribution can reduce energy use and improve operation. However, control zones must match actual uses and wiring.

Commissioning and maintenance

A useful control strategy must be possible to commission, understand and maintain. Documentation of addresses, groups, scenes and settings then becomes just as important as the hardware.
