Lighting Academy / Level 3

LED service life, thermal management and electrical quality.

Interpret service life and light quality data beyond a simple number of hours.

Objectives

By the end of this lesson.

  • Interpret service life data together with its conditions.
  • Identify the effects of thermal management, electronics and temporal light modulation.

Service life: understanding the notation

Service life information must be read alongside its methodology and conditions. Lumen maintenance, failures and operating temperature do not describe the same thing.

Thermal management

Heat strongly affects the performance and service life of LED and electronic components. A suitable product must comply with the temperatures and installation conditions stated by the manufacturer.

Flicker and modulation

Temporal light variation may matter in certain environments, uses or filming conditions. Where this criterion is important, rely on measured, comparable manufacturer data.

Maintenance in practice

Ease of access, component availability, replaceable drivers and the commercial lifecycle can matter as much as nominal performance in the overall cost.
